This month I focused on water color. At first I developed skills by practicing how to draw different shapes like a sphere and a cylinder. Then I used water color to create original art. I took risks because I experimented with water color. I problem solved by using water to blur out mistakes I made. I also use the skill of reflecting by writing this blog post. I discovered how to use water to make different variations of colors and create art. I plan to continue developing skills.

his month I did a lot of skill developing with painting. After watching the the movie on Van Gogh we practiced painting in his style. I learned how to first observe Van Gogh's style through the movie. Then I took what I observed and put it to canvas. I decided to paint a waterfall in his style. After this painting I continued developing skills by doing a beach scene painting. I took risks in both of these paintings. I had to learn to problem solve because the colors we are provided with did not exactly match my view on the painting. I mixed colors to make them come out how I wanted. I watched the videos the on embroidery and plan to learn new things and create original art.
Up to the midpoint in the year of art I have grown as an artist through many experiences in this class, and by practicing artistic behaviors. Over the past month or so I have practiced building and developing skills. I played around with wetting a piece of paper and then using chalk charcoal to draw images that had a smudge effect. When doing this I also created original art. I also worked on a few small square paintings, in the process of creating them I developed my painting skills, took risks because I had never painted that size before, and I solved problems. When things didn't go as I planned in my paintings I found ways to fix it, by adding to the background for example. By creating this blog I am reflecting on my artwork. When practicing block printing I learned to observe before I created because we watched tutorials to give us ideas. I will continue to build upon these skills as the year goes on. Over the past month in art class I did a lot of skill building. We were assigned the project of creating a portrait which is something I had not done before. I set right out to do a lot of tutorials on how to draw an eye, and ear, a nose, and a mouth. This all built my art making skills, and I needed to build these skills so I could make a portrait in the end. After building the skills of drawing I began putting all the pieces of a face together in my sketchbook. After creating a face I needed to pick what style of art I would use for the final portrait. I tested painting with acrylic paint on the sketch book and chose that I liked that. I chose to do the portrait of my mom. I took a lot of risks in creating this portrait because, like I said I have never done a portrait before. I also had to solve a lot of problems in creating my portrait because I had to test around with the paint colors, and fix the skin color. Also by making a portrait of my mom I was creating original art. Instead of copying pictures online I gathered pictures of my mom to create a picture of her. Portrait of a Young Woman
Queen Marie Antoinette Marie Louise Elisabeth Vigée-Le Brun http://www.mfa.org/node/9338 Birthday; April 5th, 1789 Job:Queen Hobbies:Sewing, and cooking Todays plans: Today I will have dinner at the castle with the family. Right now, I am sitting in my room writing this blog. I enjoy my alone time so no one is with me as I write. Dear Mom, I am writing to you from The Great Wave off Kanagawa. I have been traveling seas of Asian for a couple months now, and a harsh storm has hit our path. Waves reach over our small boats around twenty feet high. I need to find land, our food source is low and we have no water. The constant wind and crashing of waves screams in my ears. I miss you, I want to go back home. Our ships are small, and the storm is wild. I hope to see you soon. After watching a video about the Guerilla Girls and how they complain through their artwork we were then set out with the task of creating our own complaint piece. First the class made a list of different complaints and posted it to a complaint board. Then we each chose one complaint to display in artwork. My complaint piece was about hypocrites. In creating this piece I created original art. I drew a mouth with words coming out of each side , one saying “I love it” and one side saying “I hate it”. Also by drawing the mouth it was developing my skills because this is something I had never attempted before. My piece also communicates to its viewer because it speaks to the idea of hypocrites. Another artistic behavior I used was solving problems because I smudged the black water color but by adding more water it fixed the problem. After watching the video about david brooks's never seen never will i decided to use my artistic behaviors and create a picture of a mermaid under the sea. In creating this piece I communicated. I showed that I had never seen a mermaid and never will in my artwork. Also I took risks because I had never really used ink before. Not only did I take risks but I developed skills by mixing ink with watercolor.
The task party was an example of how we take risks in this class. We had limited time to complete our task so we could not plan our work out beforehand we had to just dive into it. After we read our task we immediately had to put our ideas into action. Compared to last year we would base our artwork off of other examples where in this task it was only our creativity and we created original art. Also the collaboration piece of the mural allowed us to work with our classmates to create artwork. It also helped us develop skills with graphite and using different values. I had to match the colors of the original square with only using pencil and that took a lot of shading and the use of a tortillion to achieve the shades I wanted.
To create the model figure it had to be proportional to our bodies. Therefore we had to measure the length width of our arms, head, legs, hips etc. We had to divide the measurement by 4 so it was to scale. After having the correct proportions we then drew out a figure on paper. Then after we took wire and formed a figure that was proportional to our bodies, we then stuffed the wire figure using tape and paper and covered it in plaster strips. To finalize the figure i added many different colors of paint.
For creating the mask we first took the mask mold and covered the inside part in plaster strips. To make the mask thick and sturdy I put two layers of strips making sure everything was smoothed out. Once the plaster mask was dry we took it out of the mold, and then used gesso to fill in any holes. I decided to then paint to fish on the mask using metallic water color. The i used light blue tissue paper on the background to create a water like affect. During this unit I learned how to use colors like yellow and blue to create depth in my drawings. When creating the twix i had to use colors such as yellow, blue, orange, red, green, and different shades of brown to crete the golden color of the twix. The yellow colors were used to make warm highlights and the blue colors were to create cool shadows.
