The first thing I made with clay was a pinch pot. We were given a slab of clay and had to form it into a ball. Then after we had to use our thumbs and lightly push down, forming a circular hole in the ball, and i kept pressing down until it formed a bowl shape. I had to be very careful when doing this because the clay can dry out very easily and lose its elasticity. Then I added texture to the bowl by pressing a butterfly print by pressing it into the middle of the bowl. I also added texture to my tray by pressing a print into the middle. After I completed shaping the bowl I let it sit out for about a day so it would become leather hard. At this stage it was easy to soften the edges and smooth out the bowl because the clay was moist but not elastic. The next stage is when the clay is bone dry and this is when the clay can break the easiest or its most fragile, during all projects I had to be very careful when handling the clay at this phase. Greenware is the phase where the clay is ready to be fired in the kiln. Clay must be bone dry or greenware for it to be fired in the kiln. When the pottery comes out of the kiln it is now bisque pottery, this is also the stage where you apply glaze. The pottery must be rinsed out before applying glaze to remove any dust. For my tray when I painted the texture part I applied black glaze only to the texture part then rinsed it out. The black glaze remained in the crevices of the texture and I painted over with a light blue glaze. The bisque pottery that is glazed goes in the kiln once more to fire the glaze.
